In today’s troubling times it is a good idea to have a survival kit just in case of an emergency. Part of every kit should be a survival knife. These knives can be useful in so many ways, including personal protection.
I offer the best survival knives from a variety of distributors that come in all sizes and prices. Popular choices are the air force survival knife and Gerber survival knives. We also have a variety of official Rambo survival knives.

What makes a good survival knife?

There are several things to take into consideration when buying a good survival knife. A good sheath that has a loop for your belt as well as a cord to tie around your leg. A good knife will also have a thumb rest which makes it easier for skinning game. The most important thing to consider is what the knife is made of. Stainless steel knives are harder to sharpen and do not hold an edge all that well. Carbon steel knives on the other hand are much easier to sharpen and hold their edge much longer.

The SRK® (Survival Rescue Knife®) by Cold Steel, Inc. is a tough knife for tough jobs under the toughest conditions. Cold Steel says that this knife is “able to withstand the most extreme abuse.” There seems to be little reason to doubt their claim. We get a nice review of this knife in the video below, made by YouTuber “BladeMaster369.” He gives an objective tour of the SRK’s components and compares them to similar knives for its pluses and minuses.

Some of the features that make the SRK special are its AUS 8A stainless steel blade with a “rich Teflon coat” and a handle that has a “single quillon finger guard and a deeply checkered Kraton grip.”

AUS 8A Stainless is special because it’s a high carbon, low chromium steel. Non-stainless steel has a higher carbon content. Carbon gives steel its strength, but rust can destroy it, which is why being “stainless” is a good thing. Cold Steel says that stainless is made “by adding Chromium and reducing its Carbon content during the smelting process.” But, they say, this makes stainless harder to sharpen, “and the edge-holding potential is seriously impaired.” Cold Steel says that their AUS 8A Stainless is a “high carbon, low chromium steel” that provides a good compromise “between toughness and strength, edge holding, and resistance to corrosion.”

The Cold Steel AUS 8 SRK® is one slippery knife (literally). It has a Teflon® coating, which gives its six-inch blade advantages over most non-coated blades. Cold Steel says that the Teflon® acts as a lubricant when cutting, reduces glare and reflection from the blade, and protects the blade itself.

At 10.75 inches overall and weighing just over half a pound (8.2 ounces), this is one hefty survival knife. In this video, the reviewer says that the AUS 8 is standard issue for U.S. Navy Seals in basic underwater demolition training.

The blade has a full tang running into the entire length of the handle, which is a crucial feature. That tang is what connects the blade to the handle. A partial tang compromises strength and durability, but the AUS 8 overcomes this. The handle of the AUS 8 has a single quillon finger guard and a deeply checkered Kraton® grip.

“I would not hesitate to reach for this one,” says the reviewer, “camping, hunting or it things go bad.” I would have to agree, and only add that this thing would be pretty handy in a kitchen as well.
